    History of the city

The name of the city of Siegen probably goes back to the Celtic term for the river Sieg (sikkere = fast water). In five rooms on the top floor, the following stages of the city's history are currently on display:

    • Siegen in the Middle Ages: From two city lords to one city lord
    • One city: Two denominations - two castles
    • From craftsmanship to industrialisation
    • The First World War, National Socialism and destruction
    • The path from reconstruction to University City

A new concept for the city history department is currently being planned. This will also take into account the results of the special exhibitions „Siegen. The subjective view of the city“ (2023) and „Siegen. Foreign? Home?“ (2024).
